Alberta Métis Nation Leadership Supports MNC Position on the Federal Election

June 10, 2004-(Edmonton, AB) - In an unprecedented decision, the leadership of the Métis National Council is encouraging its Métis citizens to vote for Liberal Party candidates running in the Federal Election. This position has the full support of the leadership of the Métis Nation of Alberta.

The President of the Métis National Council, Clemént Chartier says, “We are concerned that Flanagan’s opinions will be the Conservative Party’s secret policy agenda when it comes to Aboriginal people in this country. Mr. Flanagan’s vision for Aboriginal people is one of denial, assimilation and non-recognition of our constitutional rights. “

Instead of denouncing Flanagan’s ideas, Conservative Leader Stephen Harper’s response was flippant and dismissive. Harper went too far by saying he is “a forgiving lot”, a remark directed at the National Aboriginal leaders who dared to ask questions about his party’s policy on Aboriginal issues.

Alberta President Audrey Poitras says, “Our Métis citizens must be confident the next government will continue to advance the Métis Rights-based agenda. The Conservative platform on Aboriginal issues refuses to recognize the Métis Nation at all.”

“This alarming omission points to a party with a hidden Aboriginal agenda, rife with counter-productive ideas and driven by the offensive and racist writings of the Conservative National Campaign Chair, Tom Flanagan,” says Poitras.

Poitras says, “There is no doubt the Conservative party under Stephen Harper’s guidance is regressive in its position on Métis issues. Consequently, we are supporting the Métis National Council’s position to encourage Métis across the Homeland to vote Liberal.”

The Métis Nation of Alberta represents the social, political, and economic interests of more than 66,000 Métis living in the province.
